BRUSSELS: The organic produce sanctuary

This organic food market in Brussels was one of my safe heavens.Β

I love this place so much that it deserves its own post. The Tanneurs Bio Market brought so much joy to my life. For somebody trying to avoid the big supermarkets, as well as produce wrapped in plastic that are sold at smaller shops, MarchΓ© des Tanneurs is a sustainable produce heaven. Possibly the best organic food market in Brussels

Buying local and organic remains financially unaccessible for many people across Europe, (and globally). MarchΓ© des Tanneurs is changing this for the Bruxellois community. Not all produce come from Belgium, a lot of it comes from Italy and Spain, and only the bananas are source from across the ocean. However, apart from a few exceptions such as the bananas, most of the produce respect the harvest seasons. It is never a guarantee what will be available that time of the year.

There is also a strong emphasis on avoiding all plastic packaging. While most shoppers globally still find it necessary to place all their individual veggies in plastic bags, shopping bag-less is the norm at Marche de Tannerus. Paper produce bags and boxes are available, rather than the conventional plastic bags. All plastic is banned at this market and all shoppers arrive prepared with their own reusable bags.

Fresh meat and cheese produced at local farms across Belgium.

The olive oil station offers product from Greece and Italy that can be purchased in refillable glass bottles.

There are many organic markets and shops across the city, but I found all of them to be overpriced and to have limited selection of produce. This is still a common problem with the organic market globally; it remains financially inaccessible to most people. However, thanks to its size and popularity, MarchΓ© des Tanneurs is helping close this gap.

This market is a beautiful organic food hub with powerful momentum that is helping advance Brussel’s sustainable food culture.
