VLOG: Fresh Oysters in San Quintín

Having fresh oysters in San Quintin, at 8 am for breakfast, was a truly memorable experience. 

In July, at the height of the COVID-lockdown, we decided to hit the road in the search for some safe distancing adventures. We embarked on a Baja California road trip, starting in Ensenada and ending in Los Cabos. San Quintin was our first stop. San Quintin is known for its agriculture and oyster farming.

One of the most famous restaurants is El Molino Viejo; popular amongst the American community and for its ocean views. The food is good, yet nothing spectacular for the high average of Baja California cuisine. The majority of restaurants were closed due to COVID, El Molino Viejo was the only exception.

We planned our visit to San Quintin around our craving for fresh oysters. We were not ready to succumb to “the new COVID reality” and let the oyster dream die. Our waitress at Molino Viejo pointed us in the direction of Campo don Alvaro. She described it as; an oyster farmer’s family business, 25 minutes away along a dirt road –  we were sold.

Next day we ventured out to find that dirt road, and drove towards what seemed like nothing at all. After about 20 minutes we came by sporadic cardboard signs that read “Fresh Oysters for Sale,” and eventually we arrived.

Campo don Alvaro is the kind of place I love coming by in my travels. While I love spending hours on google researching some of the most popular restaurants, finding a local spot, hidden away at the source of its food production is, in my opinion, the most satisfying food experience.

A large family settled on this ocean cliff and opened up three neighboring restaurants that serve incredibly fresh seafood. 

We ordered half a dozen oysters for starters, and a “Campechana Mixta” which is like a “seafood cocktail” traditional to Ensenada, but served hot. This was the first time I tried this dish hot, and it was perfect for a windy morning.

My mission as a hungry traveller is not to find the most gourmet cuisines, but rather the freshest, the most honest, authentic, and underrated locations – and Campo don Alvaro was all of the above.
