Dar Chick Yahia: A sustainable B&B on the Tunisian island of Djerba

Wondering where to stay on the Island of Djerba? This blog post will provide you with some great inspiration!

On December 2018 I visited the Tunisian Island of Djerba for a couple of days.

We found Dar Chick Yahia, located on the Chick Yahia beach, with the intentions spending a couple days on a deserted island – and at this bed and breakfast that is exactly what we got.

The owner and host Manuel, is a retired French police chief who is living his dream life on the island. He bought the house two years ago and completely renovated it, keeping the classic Tunisian houch style. Djerba houch is the traditional architecture native to the island which is composed of a small fortress with the rooms located around an inner courtyard.

He installed solar panels and a water capturing system, and turned the house into a completely self-sustaining building.

French style breakfast included.

This is an amazing place to spend a few days away from society and take long walks on the beach. We went during winter so it was too cold to go in the water but there are many activities one can do such as fishing and windsurfing. The house is about a 15-minute taxi ride to the capital of the island.

This is a beautiful alternative to the all-inclusive hotels that predominate on the island and Manuel and Vik are amazing hosts!
